Introduction

Here’s a tricky question… Can you remember, in detail, a trip you took forty nine years ago?

Regardless of how momentous the trip was, for a lot of us the answer would be a simple  ‘no’. For a lot of us it’s hard to remember what we did last year, last month, last week or even yesterday!

The journey I am asking contributors to recollect was undoubtedly a bit special… The 1970 FIFA World Cup.

Travelling abroad to watch your club or country in 1970 was certainly not uncommon. However, making a trip beyond the confines of Europe was.

But following that historic July day in 1966, the opportunity presented itself… A once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness England – as World Champions – defend the greatest prize in football in far-flung Mexico.

‘Down Mexico Way!’ begins its story with three fans who made that  journey. They travelled independently of each other even though they frequently found themselves in the same-place-at-the-same-time. Their memories are told in chronological order to the tournament itself.

Throughout this web-book you may find contradictory episodes and incidents. The mists of time have taken care of that. But ‘Down Mexico Way!’ is an honest account of those who were part of the adventure.

‘Down Mexico Way!’ will be an on-going web-book, and over the coming weeks, months and possibly years will be added to and edited as the memories of existing contributors and new contributors are jogged.
