Thursday October 8th 1964
In Tokyo – Mexico wins the bid to hold the FIFA World Cup in 1970. They beat Argentina by 56 votes to 32.

Thursday May 18th 1967
Schoolteacher Lucio Cabanas begins a guerrilla campaign in Atoyac de Alvarez, west of Acapulco, Mexico. The government responds with widespread repression. Hundreds of civilians are killed or ‘disappeared’.

Wednesday October 2nd 1968
Just ten days before the opening of the Olympic Games in Mexico City, soldiers under President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz use automatic weapons to kill some 300 students in the Mexico City – Tlatelolco massacre. However, the Mexican government states that only fifty students are killed during gunfire that lasts five hours. Evidence in 1999 confirms that pre-positioned soldiers fired on the students. And in 2002 a special prosecutor says he has found no evidence to support claims that 300 people died. He puts the number killed at thirty-eight.
